TorPASS 2014 October: Season Opener

Join us for the first meeting of the Toronto SQL Server User Group (TorPASS) on 2 October.  Please note that we are meeting at a new location for this meeting.  Due to security processes, pre-registration is REQUIRED.  Please see note below.

We welcome Embarcadero Technologies as a new Platinum Sponsor of our chapter. We will have updates on our leadership team and what's coming at the PASS Summit in November.

Michael J. Swart will present Drawing Conclusions, a fun and sometimes irreverent look a the SQL Server and Data world through his drawings:

    • Ted Codd hates that thing you just did (modelling theory vs practice)
    • How are online changes/migrations like Indiana Jones
    • WWGLD (What would Geordi Laforge do)?
    • How would Sherlock Holmes tackle that problem?
    • ...and more.

  1. Karen Lopez will present Who is Pissing in your Data Lake, a short rant on the kinds of things that can go wrong with the data your organization is using to compliment and complement enterprise data.

  2. Finally, we'll have an Open Mic for anyone who wants to give a 5-15 minute rant/presentation/performance.  This was highly successful the last time we did this, so we are looking forward to doing this again.

5;30 - 6:00 PM  Pizza and Networking
6:00 - 8:00 PM  Presentations and Open Mic
8:00 PM Swag and Prize Draw (you must be pre-registered to win...this is our skills testing question).

SAS building has strict security measures. The SAS Resource manager will greet attendees at the entrance of the building and walk them through the elevator. We must be able to provide a pre-registered list of attendees one week prior to the meeting, so please ensure you register by end of day 25 September.  There is a chance we may be able to get in late registrants, but it is not guaranteed. This also means that you should plan on arriving prior to 6:00 PM to ensure you have access to the meeting room.  Your registration confirmation will contain information about how to contact us if you are running late.

Who Is Pissing in Your Data Lake

Speaker: Karen Lopez, Sr. Project Manager & Architect InfoAdvisors

Summary: The new data terms of Data Lake, Data Reservoir, and Data Swamp have left me with more questions than answers. In this presentation, Karen discusses the types of data anomalies that organizations can run into when they use external data, the wrong datasets for the right reasons and the right datasets for the wrong reasons.

About Karen: Karen Lopez is a Sr. Project Manager and Architect for InfoAdvisors. A frequent speaker at conferences and local user groups, she has 20+ years of experience in project and data management on large, multi-project programs. Karen is a chronic volunteer, a Data Platform MVP, and an active advocate for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and data quality. Karen’s presentations are known for their lively and interactive approach to learning. Her motto: “Love Your Data!”

Please ensure you pre-register for our meetings. Registration allows you to participate in our awesome drawings and helps us plan for the meetings.
